Miranda Hemalatha
Miranda Hemalatha is a respected dance teacher, choreographer, dancer, actress, and an educationist in the field of Aesthetic Education. She has served the country in the fields of Dance, Drama, Puppetry, and education for the last Fifty seven years in Sri Lanka.
She has won several national and international awards for her contribution in the field of arts and education.
She is the first Director of education in Aesthetic education. She performed her Bharatha Natya arrangettram in India. She won the first Colombo plan scholarship for Dance in 1963.
She has choreographed many Dramas of veteran dramatists and also her own productions. She has produced and directed number of Dance Dramas and Dance programmes with many experiments appreciated by the learned audience and critics.Amoung the dramas that she choreographed were Professor Saracchandras “Maname” Sinhabahu” Pemato jayati soko “ Kadawalalu” Ms lalitha Sarcchandras “Ratnawalie” Etc..
She stepped on to the international stage as a dancer in 1959 and still she is continuing. She ordained the female dancers with the traditional ves costume and today it has been accepted even by the universities.
Her contribution in the field of education specially in curriculum development and evaluation is highly commended by the foreign and local experts in the field .
With her 100th arangettram she will be completing the composition of Geeta Govinda as Padams in Bharata Natyam.
She has written many Varnams and Padams for Bharatha Natyam and songs for children winning international awards.
She introduced sinhala Lyrics for Bharata Natyam .she is the first dancer who composed Bharatha natyam toa sinhala lyrics. And wrote sinhala lyrics for Bharatha Natyam.
By now she has completed 100 arrangettrams and has ordined 45 girls in Ves costume creating history in the field of Dance.
Some of her creations have already added to the tradition.
Her contribution in the field of developing differently able children is very much appreciated by the educationists. Allready she has developed Down Syndrome children as teachers and for various other occupations. Now she is working for the development of a residential trining centre for the Down Syndrome children who is in need of assistance and guidence to make them as usefull citizens in this country who could in turn could contribut to the development of the country rather than being dependents for the whole of their life.
